BACKSCATTER

Definition of Backscatter

Backscatter is an English term that translates into German as Rückstreuung. However, in the technical field, the English term Backscatter is predominantly used. In general, backscatter refers to the reflection or scattering back of waves, particles, or signals.

Backscatter in the RFID Context

In the RFID world, backscatter describes the communication method between passive RFID transponders and RFID readers, in which the waves emitted by the reader are reflected by the transponder. The transponder modulates these reflected waves with information, which can then be transmitted back to the reader for further processing.
